Student Response System (PollEverywhere)

What is it?

Personal Response Systems, such as Clickers, are an important technology used at every CSU campus to increase student engagement during classes. Some instructors have used clickers for checking attendance, granting participation points, performing low stakes quizzes, taking class polls and assessing student understanding of the class materials.

SF State uses PollEverywhere(PollEv) as the officially supported student response system.

How are people using this tool?

Polleverywhere presents itself as either a standalone poll conducted online or as an integration into popular presentation software, such as Powerpoint. An instructor creates an "Activity" in PollEv containing questions that students respond to. When presenting an activity, PollEv generates a URL with a QR code to share with participants.

Students can join a session by going to the presenter's activity page using either a browser on a computer or mobile device, the PollEverywhere app, or optionally, via text message.

Student response systems are being used at SF State to:

  • Check attendance

  • Encourage peer instruction

  • Encourage shy and under-prepared students to participate

  • Grant participation points

  • Gather feedback from students on how to improve the course

  • Help identify student misconceptions
