What is it?
CourseMatch is part of the CSU Graduation Initiative 2025 that decreases bottlenecking in GE courses and enables students to access required course in a timely fashion. CourseMatch courses are fully online and asynchronous for maximum accessibility. CourseMatch allows any student enrolled in any of the 23 CSU campuses to take online courses offered by any campus and that meet CSU requirements.
SF State departments and instructors can consider submitting qualified undergraduate general education fully online and asynchronous courses (Learning Mode 01) as a means to gain additional funding for their programs.

To apply for the current Fall 2024 CourseMatch cycle, the following steps must be completed by Wednesday, April 17th, 2024:
- Secure written permission from your departmental chair.
- Complete the CourseMatch Proposal Form via Qualtrics.
- The completed CourseMatch Proposal Form requires a current syllabus of the proposed course (PDF or Word Document) and a PDF copy of your Department Chair's approval of the course (email confirmations are acceptable).
After submitting, you will see a Qualtrics confirmation that your proposal has been received.
Academic Technology will submit your materials to the CSU and notify you of the status of your proposal as soon as we receive an update from the CSU. This process typically takes 3-4 weeks.

The requirements to to qualify for CourseMatch are:
- Fully Online Asynchronous course (Must be Learning Mode 01)
- Undergraduate GE Course (can be upper or lower division)
- Less than 15% repeatable grades (D/F/WU/NC) in previous semester
- Able to reserve a minimum of 10 seats for external CSU students
- Course instructors must have completed formal training in teaching online (such as OTL, Teaching Through Transitions, JEDI PIE)
Academic Technology supports CourseMatch by providing workshops for teaching online. AT also currently acts as the CourseMatch liaison between instructors and the CSU.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, you do. Even if your course has been accepted in previous years you will still need to complete a full proposal. We will enter it into the system on your behalf.
Graduation Initiative 2025 includes a strategic focus on improving the CSU’s capacity with regard to high-demand courses so that more students have access to the classes they need in order to remain on timely progress to degree, so nominations of successful online courses that fulfill general education requirements will receive first priority for approval.
Beyond a review of the syllabus and student success rates, the Chancellor’s Office leaves the assessment of course quality to the campus nominating the course. At SF State, we no longer require a course to be QLT certified to participate in CourseMatch, but we do require the faculty member to have engaged in Academic Technology's Online Teaching professional development programming, such as the Online Teaching Lab, Teaching Through Transitions Course, or the Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (JEDI) Institute.
Congratulations! The campus will reserve at least 10 seats for CourseMatch students from other campuses. For approved courses, we coordinate directly with the Academic Resources Scheduling Office to make this happen. If these seats are not all filled by the first day of instruction they will be opened up to students from the home campus. The minimum number of seats reserved for CourseMatch students (from other campuses) is 10 per section.
