Cablecast System

To give faculty easier access to our media catalog, AT has installed the Cablecast system in dozens of classrooms across campus. Through the Cablecast system, we can broadcast any piece of media from our collection – as well as most types of media from a faculty member's personal collection – straight to your classroom. If you would like to set up a cablecast for your classroom:

  1. Call us at 338-1494 or check our online classroom database, to verify that your classroom is equipped for Cablecast.
  2. Stop by the Media Distribution center in the basement of Burk Hall to schedule your Cablecast and complete the necessary Cablecast Request form.
  3. If the media is from your personal collection, please pick it up from the Media Distribution center within a week after the last showing.

Important Notes

  • Occassionally, media will be kept out by another faculty beyond its return date. We will try to get it back in time, but cannot be held responsible for late returns. In the event of a late return, please call 338-1494 to reschedule your Cablecast. Additionally, have a contingency plan prepared for your course in the event that you cannot view the Cablecast.
  • We have closed caption decoders on several of our channels, and are making a concerted effort to update our collection so that all of the titles are closed caption encoded. If you would like to test any media ahead of time, please tell us and we would be happy to accomodate you.

Starting your Cablecast in the classroom

When you fill out the Cablecast request, you will need to select which method you would like to use to start the Cablecast in your classroom. There are currently three options as detailed below:

Call to Start

  1. Turn on the television to the channel that your Cablecast has been assigned (appears on the request form receipt);
  2. When you are ready to start your Cablecast, call extension 15103 from the phone in the classroom. Give the person that answers your last name and the channel number;
  3. Remain on the phone until you are receiving both video and audio. We can usually troubleshoot these problems over the phone.

Automatic Start

If you select Automatic Start, we will set our system to automatically begin broadcasting at the time you specify. All you need to do is turn on the television to the channel that your Cablecast has been assigned (as indicated on the request form receipt).

Note: Automatic start is not available for 16mm films.

Telephone control

Using the Telephone Control option for your Cablecast allows you to use the touch tone phone in the classroom as a remote control for the media you are viewing.

  1. Turn on your TV to the assigned channel;
  2. Using the phone, dial 80999;
  3. When prompted by the computer, enter your media number on the phone's touchpad followed by the star key;
  4. The computer will answer with the channel number – verify that your TV is on the correct channel;
  5. Press 2 and the pound key (£) to play your media;
    • If that is all you want to do, you may hang up the phone
    • If you would like other controls, such a pause, rewind, fast forward, etc., please download or ask us for our Telephone Control Instruction Sheet.
Note: You must have a touch tone phone in your classroom to use this option and the media must be either VHS, DVD or Laser disc format.
