QOLT: Quality Online Learning & Teaching @ SF State
The Quality Online Learning and Teaching (QOLT) initiative is a community of faculty peers who supports faculty teaching online at SF State. Our goal is to help faculty discover the most effective course design practices, teaching methods, and technology integration strategies.
The Quality Online Learning and Teaching (QOLT) initiative at SF State was established in 2013, in coordination with the California State University, to provide a framework to support faculty in self and peer analysis of effective blended and online course design. At the core of the initiative is the QOLT rubric containing ten objectives and 58 sub-objectives which guides faculty in designing the the highest quality blended and online courses.
A dedicated cohort of QOLT Faculty Ambassadors developed and piloted a QOLT certification process using the rubric. As part of the certification process each Ambassador attended a QOLT Institute, applied the rubric to their own online course, conducted peer reviews of each other’s courses, and incorporated peer feedback into their revised course design.
Currently, QOLT Faculty Ambassadors are reaching out to faculty teaching online within the colleges and departments to cultivate quality learning and teaching by introducing them to the QOLT rubric and the QOLT Certification process. Faculty Ambassadors are also partnering with Academic Technology staff to refine the certification process and expand upon existing resources.
Moving forward, the QOLT Faculty Ambassadors will be working hard to achieve their goals of increasing the number of Ambassadors, increasing the number of QOLT-certified courses, building buy-in from Deans and Chairs, showcasing faculty courses in campus events, and continuing to model best design and pedagogic practices.
All faculty are invited to join the QOLT Ambassadors community and learn how to apply effective course design practices, teaching methods, and technology integration strategies into their online courses.
